What are Dedicated Servers?
When we talk about hosting servers, there are 3 basic types - shared hosting servers, VPS (virtual hosting servers) and dedicated servers. Shared hosting servers host numerous clients and so the system resources per account are restricted, virtual private servers offer more configuration independence, but also affect other virtual private hosting servers on the hardware node if used imprudently, and dedicated servers offer you the opportunity to carry out everything you desire without meddling with anyone else.
Why would you need a dedicated servers?
Dedicated servers are normally much more expensive than shared hosting servers or private virtual web servers. Why would anyone, then, use them? The reply is quite simple. If your corporation has a heavy-traffic web site, or simply has very special web server setup requirements, the wisest option is a dedicated servers. For someone who is inclined to invest in security and reliability, the greater price is of no concern. You get full root-level access and can use 100% of the physical machine's resources without anyone else sharing these system resources and meddling with your online portals.
Hardware architectures
Most website hosting distributors, including us at Stampy Cloud, provide several different hardware configurations you can select from in keeping with your requirements. The hardware configurations include different types of microprocessors, a different number of cores, different RAM and server hard disk drive sizes and different traffic allowances. You can choose a web hosting Control Panel, which is a useful user interface if you would like to use the dedicated servers for web hosting purposes solely and prefer not to use a Secure Shell client for all the modifications you will be making. We offer three sorts of hosting Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.
The hosting Control Panel of your choosing
If you are a confident Linux user (our servers are running on Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could administer your dedicated servers through an SSH connection only. That, though, could be inconvenient, even more so if you decide to give full root privileges to someone else who has less technical abilities than yourself. This is why having hosting CP software activated is a great idea. The Hepsia web hosting Control Panel tool that we offer does not include full root-level access and is mainly suitable for somebody who runs numerous online portals that swallow plenty of system resources, but wishes to administer the web pages, databases and e-mail accounts via an easy-to-use hosting CP. The DirectAdmin and cPanel web hosting CPs, on the other hand, give you full server root privileges and have three access levels - root, reseller and user. If you intend to resell web hosting packages rather than utilizing the dedicated servers only for yourself, you should pick one of these two.
Server monitoring and backup procedures
Last but not least, there is the matter of monitoring the dedicated servers and of backing it up. In case of a predicament with your dedicated server, like an unresponsive Apache or a downtime, it is advisable to have some sort of monitoring platform enabled. Here at Stampy Cloud the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you order a Managed Services upgrade, they monitor the individual services on the dedicated servers as well. Backups are also an additional option - the web hosting services provider offers you data backups on our own backup web servers. You could choose a kind of RAID that would permit you to save the same data on 2 server hard disks as a protective measure in case of a hard drive failure, or in case someone whom you have ranted complete root access deletes something by mistake.
